Ynysddu Welfare lead the way in the JD Welsh Cup

Ynysddu Welfare led the way in the JD Welsh Cup this afternoon as they continued their amazing season of cup exploits by sealing a place in the Third Round with a 3-1 win away at Monmouth Town.

The Gwent County League side fell behind in the second minute through Leo Ross, but responded with two first half goals through Ethan Shide and Lewis Barnett. Holding Monmouth at bay during the second half, they eventually wrapped things up through Leigh Sharp's late penalty.

There was to be no fairytale for two other Tier 5 clubs, as Cwmbran Town lost 2-1 at home to Ton Pentre, whilst Sully Sports were beaten 3-1 by Cwmbran Celtic.

Haverfordwest County’s youth team product Ben Fawcett scored twice as the Bluebirds overcame a depleted Swansea University in a 4-3 thriller. The first half saw five goals, as County went into the break 3-2 ahead, and a missed penalty for the visitors. In an end to end second half, Levi Houapeu made a late breakthrough for the Uni to draw the sides level at 3-3, before Sean Pemberton’s 89th minute winner sent County through.

There were six different scorers for Pontypridd Town who beat Goytre 6-3, whilst in the other southern fixture Pontyclun lost 1-0 at Goytre Utd, with Chris Bell scoring an own goal.

In the northern section, eight-times winners Bangor City came from behind to beat Cefn Albion 6- 1 with Alex Darlington scoring four goals. while six of Airbus UK Broughton’s squad also got on the scoresheet as the Wingmakers cruised to a 9-1 win over Llay Welfare. Six was also the order of the day for Prestatyn Town, who booked their Third Round place with a 6-3 win at home to Berriew.

Dyffryn Nanttle Vale led 2-0 and 3-1, but lost out 4-3 at Guilsfield as Jack Harris scored an injury time winner from the penalty spot for the mid-Wales side. Llangefni Town meanwhile were the only non-Huws Gray Alliance side to progress from the north, as the Welsh Alliance leaders put five past St. Asaph City.

There were 3-1 home wins for Holyhead Hotspur and Rhyl over Ruthin Town and Caersws respectively, whilst Denbigh Town also won by the same scoreline away at Buckley Town.

Porthmadog also booked their place in Monday's draw with a 4-1 win away at Llanfair United, while Flint Town United completed the list of sides through to Round 3, after they beat Gresford 3-2.

Three ties were postponed: Cwmamman United v Blaenrhondda, Treharris Athletic Western v Briton Ferry Llansawel and Aberbargoed Buds v Penybont. All three will be played next weekend.
