Walker double fires Aberystwyth into JD Welsh Cup Final

Aberystwyth Town will play Connah’s Quay Nomads in this season’s JD Welsh Cup Final after Declan Walker’s double fired them to a 2-1 win over Newtown in Bala.

The Seasiders though had to withstand late pressure from the Robins after Nick Rushton’s 76th minute penalty set up a tense finale.

A tense opening twenty minutes saw very little goalmouth action until Walker headed Aber in front. A great pass from Joe Phillips freed forward Jon Owen down the right, and his cross was met by Walker who left Robins ‘keeper David Jones no chance.

The rest of the half reverted back to a cagey state, before the game opened up as Walker scored what proved to be the winner shortly after the restart from the penalty spot, after Jones had brought down Ryan Wade.

That brought Newtown into life, Rushton and Joe Kenton both missing half chances. Defender Ryan Sears then went close from a corner, heading just wide, before Rushton set up a frantic finish after Ashley Young handled in the box.

The Robins pushed for the equaliser, but it was Aber who went closest to scoring, Jones making a fantastic save to deny Owen on 87’, while Malcolm Melvin also had a chance to wrap things up in injury time, his lob sailing just wide.

In the end a third goal wasn’t needed, and the Seasiders join the Nomads in next month’s Final.
