Ryan Giggs attends the Urdd Eisteddfod

Ryan Giggs attended the Urdd National Eisteddfod on Wednesday (29 May) to lend his support and take part in the Welsh cultural festival that is being hosted in Cardiff Bay.

Ian Gwyn Hughes, the FAW’s Head of Public Affairs, said: “As an association we like to think we’re more than just football. We like to take part in everyday life, in Welsh culture and Welsh society.

“This is one of the biggest youth festivals in Europe and this is a fantastic opportunity for young people to be involved in the arts, culture or sports.

“It was fantastic to see Ryan provide his support to the event, representing the Men’s National Team and taking time to speak with as many people as he could at the event.”

Ryan Giggs also announced his Wales squad to play Croatia and Hungary at the Urdd Eisteddfod via a press conference, where the first questions asked were from some of young people attending the festival.

Giggs also participated in a public Q&A session on the steps of the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, alongside Assistant Coach Osian Roberts.

The Urdd National Eisteddfod is one of Europe’s largest youth touring festivals that attracts around 90,000 visitors each year and is held during Whitsun week at the end of May.

The Eisteddfod is a competitive festival with over 15,000 children and young people under the age of 25 competing during the Eisteddfod week in various competitions such as singing, dancing and performing. They are the elite few from around 40,000 competitors across Wales who have won their place following local and regional rounds held in the spring months leading up to the Eisteddfod.

The 1,800 seater Pavilion is the home of the competitions and is very much the hub of the Eisteddfod. Surrounding the Pavilion, on the ‘Maes’, there are hundreds of stalls offering a range of activities - from biking, climbing and sport sessions to a fun fair, live bands and children’s shows with some well known TV characters.

The Urdd Eisteddfod week is the result of the hard work by local volunteers.

The Urdd Eisteddfod is held in a different location in Wales each year. In 2020 it will be held in Denbighshire and in 2021 it will be held in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire.
