The exhibit is entitled ‘Heroes’ and features Fôn Williams’ paintings of scenes and Wales players from UEFA Euro 2016.

“I’ve always felt that I’ve been very fortunate during my professional career as a footballer,” said Fôn Williams. “The experience of playing at incredible stadiums and visiting some magnificent places, which was a distance dream when growing up in Penygroes.

“I’ve also felt fortunate in being able to turn to my artwork; it’s always been a way of escaping the day to day pressures of life in the footballing world. It’s allowed me to connect with my roots in Dyffryn Nantlle and my affection for Welsh identity and our people.”

The 'Heroes' exhibition is a collection of original paintings that will cover two main themes.

The first set of 'Heroes' are those of the national football team who reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

This collection contains 11 original paintings that portray Fôn Williams’ memories of that incredible summer.

Portraits include Gareth Bale, Chris Coleman, Aaron Ramsey, Ashley Williams, Wayne Hennessey.

In addition, the goalkeeper’s 'Together Stronger' painting will also be part of the exhibition along with a number of unique items that have been supplied by the FAW.

The second section of the exhibition is a tribute to Fôn Williams’ personal 'heroes', the quarrymen who worked in the North Wales quarries.

Fôn Williams said: “Having grown up in Dyffryn Nantlle, the history, heritage and culture created by the Slate industry is something truly incredible.

“My quarrymen section includes original paintings that portray the life and times of the quarrymen who worked in the slate quarries.”

Ian Gwyn Hughes, the FAW’s Head of Public Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement, opened the exhibition at Oriel Ynys Môn and said: “Owain Fôn Williams’ exhibition is well worth visiting during the next few weeks. It was a privilege to open the exhibition on behalf of a very proud Welshman.

“His paintings bring back fantastic memories of Euro 2016 and every one has a story to tell.

“The exhibition is accompanied by a poignant and emotional film of a supporter’s journey to France two years ago.”

Fôn Williams explained: “As part of the exhibition, we are proudly showing a brilliant ‘self-filmed’ documentary by Iwan Pritchard Huws, which captured and portrayed his experience in France as a fan following the national team during Euro 2016.

“Sadly, we lost Iwan to a fatal accident on Tryfan earlier this year. Iwan was a keen footballer and a childhood friend of mine and the family. His death has been a huge loss to all who knew him and it is a privilege for me to have this opportunity to share his work as part of my exhibition.”

The ‘Heroes’ Exibition is open and runs until 5 August 2018.
