JD Welsh Cup R1 - Rhondda derby and a World Cup winner

Following the completion of the opening two qualifying rounds, the 133rd JD Welsh Cup competition continues this weekend with a full programme of Round 1 fixtures taking place up and down the country.

One of the oldest cup competitions in the world game, each season inspires a number of fantastic stories from all levels of the Welsh football pyramid, and this season is unlikely to be any different.

Pedro Pasculli enjoyed World Cup success with Argentina in 1986, but will get his first taste of Welsh Cup football on Saturday when his Bangor City side travel to Nefyn United.

Meanwhile, debutants Bangor 1876 will host Penycae following their 6-2 victory over Penrhyndeudraeth in the last qualifying round, and both teams could well find themselves in the hat for the next round having avoided each other at this early stage of the competition.

Colwyn Bay also make their return to the JD Welsh Cup having entered the Welsh pyramid system this season, and they make the journey to Corwen on Saturday.

There is also plenty of action in the south of the country, as Caerleon will look to build on their penalty shoot-out victory over Goytre in the last round when they travel to high-flying Swansea University, while fellow JD Cymru South pacesetters Ammanford and Haverfordwest County host Cardiff Draconians and Penlan Social respectively.

Llanelli Town are also challenging for a return to the domestic top-flight, but their league ambitions will be put to one side for the visit of Cwmamman United this weekend. However, the Reds are currently without a manager, following the surprise resignation of Andy Hill earlier this week.

Elsewhere, Ton Pentre were 5-1 winners over Vale United in the last round, and make the trip to Builth Wells on Saturday for their latest challenge, while there is a Friday night derby in the Rhondda to kick-off an exciting weekend of JD Welsh Cup action as Cambrian & Clydach host Ynyshir Albions.
