FAW Youth Cup Quarter Finals Round-up

There was a double success for Flintshire in the FAW Youth Cup on Sunday as Airbus UK Broughton and Connah’s Quay Nomads both booked their place in the Semi-Finals of the competition.

The duo will join Swansea City who have won the competition for the last eight seasons and Craig Bellamy’s Cardiff City in the last four, which will be played at neutral venues on, or before, Sunday 18th March.

Both Airbus and Connah’s Quay had to win away from home to confirm their names in the draw for the next round. The Wingmakers travelled to Llandudno and won 2-1 against Sean Eardley’s side with a goal in each half from Oliver Lanceley and Harvey Ellis.

The Nomads travelled to Richmond Park to face Carmarthen Town, but they were too strong for their hosts, winning 4-1.

The holders made light work of Newport County with a 6-1 win. Defender Brandon Cooper led the way with a brace and fellow Wales Under 19 cap Oliver Cooper also scored. The other young Swans on the scoresheet were Jack Fox, Finley Hazel and Dutchman Kees De Boer. Liam Bishop scored the solitary goal for the County.

Bellamy’s City progressed against Bari Morgan’s Aberystwyth Town at Leckwith with a convincing 7-0 win.

Connah’s Quay became the second winners of the FAW’s annual Youth Cup competition when they lifted the Trophy in 1947/48, but they haven’t claimed the prize since. Cardiff City first got their hands on the silverware in the 1968-69 season and have gone on to win it fifteen times since, lastly in 2005/06 when as 16-year old Chris Gunter played for the Bluebirds.

The Swans first won the Youth Cup in 1950/51 as Swansea Town and have now won it a record seventeen times. Airbus have yet to win the competition, but a team from nearby Saltney were Champions in the 1955/56 season.
